Suzan is a visiting scholar from Aalborg University, Denmark. She received her BSc from Twente University, the Netherlands. But her interest in electrical stimulation and recording of the nervous system led her to pursue a master’s education in Denmark. Since then, she has worked with this topic with the aim of relieving incontinence. During her PhD, she characterized implanted nerve stimulation electrodes in pigs for relieving incontinence. After her PhD she led a clinical trial with these electrodes. Since her post doc, she has been working with pain and neuroplasticity, including studies in humans and pigs. She has recently concluded the development of two chronic pain models, where pain sensitivity and brain plasticity were investigated in pigs up to 6 weeks after implantation of a cranial window to the brain. Although the beauty and complexity of the nervous system is enticing, her aim is greater than understanding it. She aims to restore functions lost due to disease or injury. Here, the nervous system provides excellent opportunities. Electrical current can be used to activate and suppress functions where a person has lost the ability to do so. Suzan loves to go for a bite or drink with colleagues after a long lab day. :-)
